Exploring the Trail of 100 Giants

The Trail of 100 Giants is one of the most awe-inspiring destinations in the southern Sierra Nevada. Located within the Sequoia National Forest, this gentle, family-friendly trail winds through a grove of ancient giant sequoias, some of which are over 1,500 years old. As you walk the paved 1.3-mile loop, you’ll be surrounded by these towering trees, their massive trunks rising like natural skyscrapers. Interpretive signs along the trail provide fascinating insights into the history and ecology of these giants, making it a perfect blend of education and adventure.

From Kernville, the journey to the Trail of 100 Giants is a scenic adventure in itself. The drive takes you through the breathtaking Kern River Canyon along Mountain Highway 99, offering stunning views of the river below. After about 19 miles, you’ll reach the town of Johnsondale, where you’ll transition onto M-90, also known as the Western Divide Highway. Continue for another 16 miles, and you’ll arrive at the Long Meadow Grove, where the Trail of 100 Giants is located. The entire trip from Kernville typically takes about an hour and a half, but you’ll want to allow extra time for stops along the way to fully appreciate the natural beauty of the region.

Parking is available at the trailhead, where you’ll find picnic tables, restrooms, and informational kiosks to help you plan your visit. The trail is accessible for all ages and abilities, with a smooth, well-maintained path that accommodates strollers and wheelchairs. While the loop is short, many visitors spend hours exploring the grove, captivated by the sheer size of the trees and the tranquility of the forest. The Trail of 100 Giants is open from late spring to early fall, depending on weather conditions, so it’s best to check ahead for current access and road conditions.
